European leaders to meet Feb. 22 on economy
BERLIN (AP) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel will host a meeting of key European leaders in Berlin on Feb. 22 to help prepare for an April international summit on combating the financial crisis, a spokesman said Friday.
Merkel will welcome the leaders of Britain, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic to the chancellery in Berlin, said her spokesman, Ulrich Wilhelm.
The Czech Republic currently holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, while Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker ispresident of the euro group, representing the 16 countries that use the currency.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank, are also invited to the Berlin meeting, Wilhelm said at a regular government news conference.
The meeting is meant to help coordinate the position of European members of the Group of 20 nations ahead of that group’s April 2 meeting in London, he said.
German officials have previously announced plans for a meeting in late February but had not set a precise date.
The London talks will follow up on a November summit in Washington.
