LONDON (AP) – Two British art galleries say they have together acquired Titian’s “Diana and Actaeon” after an appeal for donations to purchase the classic painting.
The announcement came Monday, with the National Gallery of Scotland and London’s National Gallery saying they had managed to raise the 50 million pounds ($70 million) to buy the Renaissance master’s artwork.
Last year, the painting’s owner, the Duke of Sutherland, offered it to major public galleries for a third of the 150 million pounds ($210 million) it was estimated to be worth. The Duke says he’ll offer another Titian, “Diana and Callisto,” to the galleries in four years at the same price.
The galleries will take turns showing the painting.
